Kokebi Coffee | Ethiopia Guji | Sidamo Coffee Beans

James Marinos • Mar 21, 2022

Fairtrade 100% Arabica | Medium Roast | Strength 3/6

There are few coffee beans more desired for their quality than organically grown single origin Arabica coffee beans. However, in our opinion none more so than those sourced from Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, which remains unrivalled in the diversity of its beans.

This is why we are delighted to share with our loyal Kokebi Coffee customers our brand-new speciality Ethiopian Guji coffee beans - Ethiopia Guji. Ethiopia produces an incredibly diverse range of coffee, each with its own set of distinct characteristics, further influenced by regions, conditions and farming techniques.

This is why we have selected the Sidamo region, which is directly on the border with Kenya where the coffee is grown at high altitudes of 1500 metres producing only the best quality Arabica varietals. The soils of the highlands in Sidamo are also heavily volcanic which further improves the flavour and character of this fine coffee.

It is here in Sidamo that we found the perfect choice for our single origin coffee, uncompromising on quality and flavour while meeting our organic and Fairtrade stipulations, Shakisso Farm. It is here coffee producer Haile, the godfather of Guji coffee and founder of Shakisso Farm is located.

In the last fifteen years, Haile saw Guji transform from a cattle farming area to a coffee region. Together with his two friends, Menno and Tesfaye, Haile put Guji coffee on the map. Today, more than 45 washing stations and 55 dry mills have been established since the introduction of Guji, which produces the Heirloom strain of Arabica.

We have roasted our Guji beans to a light medium roast to ensure that the origin profiles of delicate florals, nectarine, citrus and candy are still intact, while embellishing the flavour with chocolatey roast profile notes. Roasting our coffee to this level also compliments the natural juicy fruit profiles, while retaining some of the acidity to keep the flavour and aroma balanced, producing a 3/6 flavour strength.

We strongly recommend pairing our Sidamo Guji with drinks including: Latte, Cappuccino, Flat white, Cafe au lait, Mocha, Espresso, Macchiato, Double Espresso and Iced Coffees as well as dishes including creamy cheeses like ricotta and mozzarella, as well as pastries and desserts like pavlova and cheesecake.

Ethiopian Guji is available in 250g bags for both home delivery and specialty coffee shops for resale, to offer a gourmet alternative to your house blend.

Beans stay fresher for longer, and so your coffee should taste better, too. As soon as green coffee beans are roasted, they start to release CO2, which affects the taste. They will oxidise and slowly start to go 'stale' and have a flat taste after a while. When coffee is ground, there is a higher surface area which is exposed to oxygen and that will cause them to lose their freshness faster, so it's best to keep coffee beans whole as close to brewing as possible. Treat your coffee beans similarly to potatoes: store them in a dark, dry place. It's best they are kept in a container or the bag they come in to stop oxygen and moisture getting in.
