Quick, easy and delicious: Kokebi Coffee BBQ sauce recipe

Summer is back and and if you love time out in the sun, what better way to spice up your evenings and weekends by getting the BBQ fired up for delicious burgers, steaks, seafood and veggie kebabs.

Herbs, spices and sauces are the cornerstone of any BBQ, and with our latest recipe we have switched things up for coffee and BBQ lovers in search of a more savoury BBQ sauce to add complexity and an earthy, smokey component.

Our home made BBQ sauce also boasts less sweetness than you will find off the supermarket shelf, but best of all you can make it easily and quickly at home!

Before we get into the recipe, we recommend using either our Organico blend for a more peppery finish to your steaks and burgers or Leonardo for a rich Cedar wood flavour to pork, fish or vegetable dishes.

Lastly, if a full batch is too much, simply half the ingredients below which can be stored in a jar and refrigerated for up to two weeks.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup brewed espresso | Organico - Peppery | Leonardo - Cedar Wood
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 3 fresh chili peppers | We recommend Jalapeño or cook's red/green supermarket cooking chillies (discard the seeds)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder

METHOD

  1. Take all the ingredients and place them into a saucepan on the hob.
  2. Stir them together over a medium high heat on the stove until they begin to simmer. Once simmering lower the heat and cook for a further twenty minutes.
  3. After ten minutes, add up to a tablespoon of water depending on the consistency you prefer for your BBQ sauce.
  4. After the full twenty minutes is up, remove the pan from the heat and let your sauce ingredients cool.
  5. When your mixture has cooled, puree in a blender and serve your finished BBQ sauce!
  6. Use immediately or store for later use.

In addition to using our barbecue sauce fresh at the table, why not use our recipe as a marinade or finishing sauce for grilled or baked pork, beef, or chicken?

Beans stay fresher for longer, and so your coffee should taste better, too. As soon as green coffee beans are roasted, they start to release CO2, which affects the taste. They will oxidise and slowly start to go 'stale' and have a flat taste after a while. When coffee is ground, there is a higher surface area which is exposed to oxygen and that will cause them to lose their freshness faster, so it's best to keep coffee beans whole as close to brewing as possible. Treat your coffee beans similarly to potatoes: store them in a dark, dry place. It's best they are kept in a container or the bag they come in to stop oxygen and moisture getting in.
